CLASS DESCRIPTION

In a rapidly evolving dance industry, floorwork is prevalent now more than ever before. And while the demand for dancers to be able to execute virtuosic floorwork continues to rise, AJ began to notice a pattern…

Dancers were consistently being asked to perform high-level, physically demanding movement without ever being given the proper tools to understand how to approach it safely, efficiently, and with confidence. In many fast-paced choreography settings, dancers are expected to pick up intricate floorwork phrases instantly, often without learning the mechanics, pathways, strength, or movement principles required to execute them sustainably.

AJ aims to bridge that gap in her classes.

AJ emphasizes how these movements work — helping dancers build a deeper understanding of momentum, weight transfer, inversions, transitions, fluidity, and spatial awareness so they can approach complex floorwork with greater clarity and control.

Class begins with a dynamic warm up designed to establish body awareness, activate the muscles, and safely prepare dancers for an extensive practice. We’ll move into guided breakdowns in center and across the floor progressions to deepen each dancer’s relationship to the floor by prioritizing fundamentals, exploring complex pathways, and drilling inversions and high-level tricks.

Class culminates in a final phrase that blends floorwork with contemporary movement, incorporating skills and themes explored throughout the session. Dancers will train movement quality just as intensely as athleticism, learning how to seamlessly connect transitions in and out of the floor while integrating contemporary dynamics into phrasework.
